Claiming unemployment benefits in France – dos and don’ts
Even though France is one of the most popular countries in the world and one of people’s top choices when it comes to relocation, there are some recent studies that show the unemployment rate has significantly increased in the last few years. In order to help those who are left jobless, the government is constantly looking for new solutions to reduce the rate and to offer unemployed people some benefits. Here’s what you should do if you are left without a job in France.
Do – go to the closest Pôle emploi
So you are now without a job in France. Even though this sounds like a nightmare scenario, the first thing you need to do is keep calm. Then, you have to start looking for information regarding the steps you need to follow to claim your unemployment benefits. The first thing to do is to check where the closest Pôle emploi is located and to go and register there. The maximum period during which you can opt for actualiser situation 93 and express your job search interest is of twelve months.
Don’t – forget to check if you are eligible
Unemployment benefits are not meant for everyone, but only for those that can prove and confirm their eligibility. For instance, salaried people have the right to access these benefits, because they contributed to the France’s National Insurance scheme.
Do – file a claim
Probably the most difficult part of this process is to prove that you are eligible to receive unemployment benefits. Once you have had this figured out, the next step is to file a claim, which is actually a straightforward action. You can contact the job centre via their phone or opt for making an online application (it is the era of technology and speed, after all!). An adviser will assess your application and then will contact you in order to provide you with all the details you need to know regarding this process. Also, the adviser will assist you and help you better your job search skills.
Don’t – misplace or forget your documents!
Together with the adviser, you will establish a date for the interview when you will have to bring all the necessary documents, such as driving license, birth certificate, statement of income, bank account status and National insurance number. Make sure you don’t misplace or forget them at home, because you will lower your chances to obtain unemployment benefits.
Do – hurry up submitting the application
The more you wait until you submit the application, the more you lower your chances to get eligible for unemployment benefits and to find a new job. You should know that you won’t have access to those benefits right after you are left jobless, because the entire process takes time.
Don’t – forget to attend reviews
Your adviser will assist you throughout the process, and their job is also to establish review meetings every now and then in order to sharpen your job search skills and to help you find the job you want. Not attending these meetings will have a negative influence on obtaining unemployment benefits and finding other employment opportunities.
